Testimonials

“The 'Foodie Tour' was a fun way to spend an afternoon! As a local resident I was filled not only with great food, but also firsthand recommendations to share with friends. I will definitely make return visits. The tour showcases unique, fun places where the staff greeted guests with gracious San Antonio hospitality. Being temporarily on my own, joining an interesting group of other interesting, fun 'foodies' (good for singles who might not feel comfortable dining alone) was perfect. If was relaxing being driven in a comfortable van without worrying about directions, parking or having a bit of extra 'refeshment'. This was definitely worth a repeat! ”

Augie's Barbed Wire Smokehouse

Augie’s is definitely off the beaten path. Follow the trail to the Japanese Tea Gardens and look across the parking lot. Do you see the very large mushroom? You’ve found Augie’s, where they serve the best bar b que in San Antonio! All of their meats are pit smoked on the property, in the smokehouse behind the new beer garden. The briskets are smoked for 26 hours and it is unbeatable smothered in Augie’s own bbq sauce! Everything is ordered cafeteria style and then you can choose to sit in the quant, indoor dining area and watch the miniature passenger train pass by or take your food out to the covered beer garden and maybe catch a ball game on their new 12’ wide projection screen. Also, don’t forget a cold brew to go with that bbq!

Bluestar Brewing Company

The Bluestar Brewing Company opened in 1996 in the Historic King William district. It is in the heart of the Bluestar Art Complex. It is one only a handful of operating breweries in San Antonio and also sports a pretty extensive and delicious food menu! Grab a brew, a table, and watch the game on their big screen or pop by on Tuesday nights for some big band jazz! This little brewery is quite at home as it is housed in an old beer warehouse and has a great loft area for parties. Before you leave, be sure to try their homemade bread pudding with “beer” sauce, yum!

The Cove

Even before The Cove was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives, with Guy Fieri, it was a popular hangout. After all, where else could you wash your car and your clothes, all while enjoying a fabulous meal?! (We aren’t talking vending machines!). Lisa & Sam have something that is not seen very often. Their menu items are locally grown and organic. Some menu items include the lamb burger and bison burger along with roasted beet salad and fish tacos! Fresh is the only way to describe their tastes. You can enjoy an extensive line up of beers and wines as well as live music most nights of the week. Bring the kids along and they can play on the playground, ping pong table, or basketball court while you relax.

The Friendly Spot

The name pretty much says it all! This absolutely gorgeous, outdoor venue is great for pulling up a chair, letting the kids play on the playground, and relaxing with friends and a beer (or wine). The folks here are friendly and they put out some really delicious food too! Don’t leave without trying the street tacos or the ceviche’. These mouthwatering delights will tickle anybody’s fancy and are the perfect size for a little nosh. This little gem of a place is nestled in the King William Historic District on Alamo St. and should not be missed!

Frosted Delights by Joyce

This quaint, new bakery/coffee shop in Southtown is the perfect addition to the King William Historic District! It is located on Alamo St. just past Rosario’s. As you walk in the door you are instantly whisked away by the wonderful smell of cupcakes and coffee. The huge selection of coffees with a “featured” coffee of the day is not the only reason to come here. Joyce is famous for her cakes and, now, her cupcakes. The atmosphere is definitely homey and the folks that work here treat everyone that comes through the door just like friends. Joyce may come through the dining area in her cute chef’s hat and stop by your table to chat. Make sure that you take the time necessary to just relax and smell the coffee and savor a treat!

Joseph’s Storehouse Bakery & Café

You can smell the fresh bread baking as you step out of your car! When you walk in the front door you are hit with the aroma of the fudge covered chocolate cake and cinnamon rolls. You can’t decide whether to eat lunch first of dive into dessert! Patrick McCurdy opened Joseph’s in the summer of 1992 and has been serving San Antonio ever since. Patrick doesn’t just serve food, he also has church services in the restaurant every Sunday morning. Joseph’s was started as way for Patrick to serve Jesus through serving up fresh baked goods, casseroles, and sandwiches with a friendly smile and a “God Bless you”! You will always be made to feel at home at Joseph’s.

Luther's

Luther’s has been serving up classic burgers, Texas chili, Irish Stew, and a long list of other menu items since 1949. Although it has changed owners a few times, it has kept the original menu items and added a few more.  Luther's is a pretty hopping place as they have live music on the weekends and other events during the week.  Guests on our tours have loved the prickly pear margarita's at Luther's, so be sure to order one and let us know how you like it!
